What if my VIN doesn’t decode?

First, ensure each digit was entered correctly. Keep in mind that VINs never have the letters 'O' or 'I' in them so make sure these weren't added instead of the numbers '1' and '0.' This is a common error. In most cases, vehicles with VINs shorter than 17 digits were manufactured prior to 1981, and will not decode. This means that CARPROOF will not be able to identify the year, make and model for the vehicle. However, CARPROOF can still report any vehicle history information collected and archived by our data providers.

How can I verify my vehicle identification number?

Have you been given a fake VIN? Check each location where the number appears on your car to make sure it is the same in each place and that there are no signs of tampering. Match this number to the one found on the original vehicle registration form (not a photocopy). Lastly, you can use CARPROOF's free decoder to reveal the vehicle's characteristics and confirm that they all match.
